CANDIDATE ATTORNEYS

Applications close on 15 March each year.

Each year Venns employs a number of law graduates as candidate attorneys, who train under the supervision of our professional staff. During this two-year period, the CAs move through each of the four divisions in our firm [litigation, debt recoveries, property and commercial], to build a strong foundation for their future careers in law. We believe that a well-rounded and balanced training programme equips our CAs for the challenges ahead.

The training of a new recruit is an ongoing process. On arrival, our CAs enjoy a 4-week induction programme, getting to know the nuts and bolts of a law firm. They are introduced to the support staff, the firm’s policies and procedures, our intranet and web services, and all professional staff and directors. They are encouraged to interact and socialise with all members of the firm, and to take as much from the experience as possible.

During their time in each division, each CA has a mentor who will guide them through the work to be done. The emphasis is on practical experience through consultations with clients; attendances at court, the Deeds Office and Master’s office; drafting documents and opinions, and carrying out research.

We also run an in-house lecture programme covering various topics, which aims to keep our CAs up-to-date with new developments in the law.

We conduct interviews in April each year on the Pietermaritzburg and Durban campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as at our offices for those prospective candidates from further afield.

Those applicants shortlisted for interviews will be contacted by the end of March. Should you not hear from us by this time, you can assume your application has not been successful.
